Albania is expected to receive the World Bank’s loan, amounting to 150 million U.S. dollars, to improve the country’s energy sector, state media said on Tuesday.

The investment aims to enhance the reliability of the electricity supply and the financial viability of the energy sector, according to the Albanian Telegraphic Agency.

The financial package from the World Bank focuses on energy infrastructures including electrical network, distribution sub-stations, power measurement systems and power management.

Albanian cities including Tirana, Durres, Shkodra, Fieri and Vlora will receive large shares.

"The World Bank Board is expected, within this month, to approve the 150 million dollars loan, which will be adopted by the Albanian Parliament," said sources with the Albanian Energy and Industry Ministry.

"This (financial) package …… calls for the complete implementation of a reform in the energy sector, including harsh regulatory measures and a new law governing the electrical energy sector, to be submitted to the parliament soon," the ministry sources said.

"Increased reliability and financial sustainability of the energy sector are among the most important reforms needed to stimulate economic growth and restore fiscal balance in Albania," said Ellen Goldstein, World Bank Country Director for Southeast Europe.
